EVA International 2016 – Still (the) Barbarians
In 2016 Ireland commemorated the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising with nationwide events. Taking its title from Constantine Cavafy’s 1898 poem, ‘Waiting for the Barbarians’ the 2016 edition of EVA International, Still (the) Barbarians, offered a compelling reflection on the history and legacy of our colonial past and responded to the 1916 rising.
Curated by Koyo Kouoh, Still (the) Barbarians sought to investigate “the postcolonial condition of Ireland as a way to articulate artistic reflections, critical redefinitions, and political transformations” [taken from the introduction to the accompanying catalogue].
Still (the) Barbarians featured the work of 57 artists, including new commissions by Kostas Bassanos, Eric Baudelaire, Godfried Donkor, Mary Evans, Tom Flanagan and Megs Morley, Liam Gillick, Carsten Höller, Michael Joo, Abdoulaye Konaté, Kemang Wa Lehulere, Charles Lim Yi Yong, Alice Maher, Pádraic E. Moore, Alan Phelan, Johannes Phokela, Deirdre Power and Softday (Sean Taylor and Mikael Fernström), Willem de Rooij, Tracey Rose, Mona Vatamanu and Florin Tudor, John Waid.
A 256 page catalogue was produced to coincide with Still (the) Barbarians, featuring a curatorial essay by Koyo Kouoh, and artist profile pages of all participating artists. Copies of the catalogue are available to purchase here.
