Susan MacWilliam, Stereoscopic Images, 1999 - 2001, photographic installation, 18 x 32 x 20 cm

Susan MacWilliam

b. 1969, Ireland

The stereoscopes present 3D images. The images are observed through special viewing glasses, creating an intimate experience. The subjects are derived from previous video works, and have been staged and photographed either in the studio or externally. They are based on my researches into spiritualism, materialisation mediums, trance, hysteria and psychology. The work is concerned with ideas of reproduction and illusion, and explores an aspect of the history of photography and the presentation of the moving image. The stereoscopes are part of an ongoing body of works which examines how 3D and moving images are constructed.

Set 1 (2001) presents tableaux that complement the imagery used in the video work Faint (1999). Faint presented images of a fainting girl set within a formal garden

Set 2 (1999) depicts black and white images of ghosts, ectoplasm and seance apparatus. These images were staged and photographed in the studio.
