Staffan Nihlén
b. 1929, Sweden
Forget the calculated ‘current’; it disappears, fizzles out. To make art requires another level. Through a body, what I am, is always something else, something beyond, ungraspable, yet still crystal clear.
The work space is beside the River Shannon. The dark limestone fills the room with its tone when I arrive in the morning. The stones convey an expression and emotional density, where Wallace Stevens’ poems – now taking up my attention – enrich my vision. The Limerick Suite comes about as if without my participation – the same bliss as in the first childhood paintings. Anticipated the urge and desire.
