Paolo Canevari
b. 1963, Italy
My work revolves around the concept of what sculpture is in a contemporary context. What I’m trying to elude to is the classic and rhetoric tradition that goes hand in hand with the idea of sculpture. The material itself becomes a ‘representation’, and works as a key which opens doors to different interpretative levels. I believe in a form of art which constructs itself through a mental process. I believe in a form of art which is truly democratic. Materials, as much as forms, words, performances, site-specific works or objects, become the means which define the idea, the concept. Therefore they are transitory, impermanent, mere vehicles leading to a mental ‘work of art’.
