Neva Elliott

b. 1976, Ireland

In a society increasingly preoccupied with self-help and self-awareness, we are surrounded by quick ‘solutions’ – books on how to solve your problems, quizzes to determine who you really are, who you wish you were, and how to transform yourself in five days. State of mind is perceived as something that can be summed up and changed in an instant.

Self ® Assessment and Self ® Amendment are pharmaceutical-type kits dispensed from a fully functioning vending machine. The kits, and the experience of purchasing them, offer a critique of quick-fix-therapy culture, our capacity for self-obsession, and the conviction that our foibles can be cured instantaneously.
