Friend Map, 1976, A Bottle of Stout in Every Pub in Buncrana, 1978-79

Two photo collage works that documented actions carried out by the artist in the North of Ireland in the 1970s. Friend Map, a work that assembled photographs of friends and friends on a map of Belfast creating a visual network of social connections and relationships that cross geographical, religious and political divisions. A Bottle of Stout in Every Pub in Buncrana, a collage of photographs of pub exteriors in Buncrana. In 1978, the artist attempted to drink a bottle of Guinness in each of them within the course of a day.

John Carson is a conceptual artist who lives in Pittsburgh (US). Carson has previously exhibited at public arts institutions and galleries including Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, Dublin (IE), ICA, London (UK), IKON, Birmingham (UK), and PS1, New York (US). A survey publication what not – selected artworks and ephemera 1975–96 was published by Askeaton Contemporary Arts in 2021.
