Dinu Li
b. 1965, Hong Kong
Dinu Li’s practice is rooted between photography and the moving image. He utilises a range of strategies and styles, and is prepared to take risks and ask questions in pursuit of further challenges and a deepening understanding of the visual image, of different people’s ways of life and his own experiences. Li’s projects are characterised by a passion for approaching and engaging with a wide range of cultures, and is firmly rooted in his own Anglo-Chinese experience.
The foundation to Dinu Li’s work stems from an engagement with foreign places, different histories and the lives of others. The works are layered with many interpretations, and are brought about by his extensive travel and research. Often described as ‘issue-based work’, Li’s interrogation into what is ‘foreign’, ‘different’ or ‘other’ is in relation to an increasingly globalised, but at the same time, fragmented world. Being British Chinese, Li is interested in the duality between two cultural perspectives, that of eastern and western values. This he reveals by looking at one’s identity, memories and life journeys, be they real or imaginary.
