Beth Derbyshire

b. 1971

Derbyshire’s approach has been to use her own voice to explore sound visually and her self-designated role as a replacement viewing aid.

Sound is a form of measurement. Being a penetrative medium, it operates in as object-like way, both physically and metaphorically. In many ways, it runs parallel to events. It is in itself sculptural, in turn charting an individual’s position geographical and physiologically. Derbyshire’s piece is constructed from a pre-recorded word-bank so that the voice heard becomes a representation of the artist’s voice.
