b. 1972, Ireland
Into the Blue #1 and #2 formed part of a series of images I completed for my degree exhibition in 1998. The work is concerned with personal issues surrounding myself and my son, and my separation from him throughout the year at college. My focus was on the surface shared by mother and son, not only physical, but mental and emotional, and how space that can provide protection and strength can also become a site for manipulation if intruded upon. The work methods used involved the use of objects and images in relation to each other in order to define a space. The materials are ready-made, sometimes scattered by me, and reflect concerns with the perception of reality, pretence and deception.
