Anthony Hobbs & Fergus Martin
We have brought to this project our different backgrounds and experience as painter and photographer out of a desire to explore ways of experiencing the representation of the human figure. We were attracted to the physical quality of the pictures. We sought an extraordinary level of detail and clarity in our attempt to create the illusion of reality.
From our different positions on either side of the camera, we wanted to create images which, though natural and unmediated, appear staged as tableaux. The figure in Classical and Renaissance art has been a reference point in this project. The gestures and postures are representative of states of being, and of being in the here and now.
