Praneet Soi: Srinagar
Praneet Soi's project commissioned for EVA International 2014 at IMMA | Irish Museum of Modern Art in 2015
Thursday 1st January, 2015
A special re-staging of the complete work Srinagar by artist Praneet Soi, commissioned for EVA International 2014, supported by Outset England and Outset Netherlands through the International Production Fund, will take place at IMMA | Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin in 2015, dates TBC.
The work was made over the course of four years of practice focussed on the unrest and beauty of the Kashmir region, and specifically in Srinagar, dating to the aftermath of a traumatic period of violence between the Indian Military and local Sufi people of the city in 2010.
Soi’s exquisite slide show of images and collages is composed from the textures and mesmerizing aesthetic of the Sufi architectural influence on Kashmir. The 44 12”x12” hand painted tiles form a major part of the installation. They were produced working with artisans who practice the ancient papier maché technology brought to the area by Sufi influence from Iran in the 14th century.
