e v+ a 2007 Curatorial Approach

Where are we at all? and whenabouts in the name of space?
—James Joyce, Finnegans Wake

For art to be experienced or observed, it has to be emplaced — put in place, however temporarily. A national exhibition with an international character such as ev+a, which is rooted deeply in one place, one history, and one culture, yet embraces the right to diversity within its borders, must inevitably focus on the dialectic of emplacement and displacement. The poet Seamus Heaney speaks of the "two often contradictory demands" under which Irish poets’ labor: "To be faithful to the collective historical experience and to be true to the recognitions of the emerging self." According to Heaney, the two ways in which a place is known — one is the lived and illiterate; the other, learned and literate — co-exist "in a conscious and unconscious tension" in the artistic sensibility.

e v+ a 2007 will present 32 artists, of which only 18 are Irish. The remaining 14 artists are from the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Canada, and the United States. For three months, from March 29 – June 24, 2007, the place (the city of Limerick and the traditional and nontraditional sites chosen by myself and the artists) will be the limit and the condition of all the art and related events, where the artistic sensibilities of those at home and those displaced will co-exist in a conscious and unconscious tension.

OPEN e v+ a 2007 Catalogue
The Catalogue of  OPEN e v+ a 2007 / A Sense of Place was launched by curator Klaus Ottmann at Limerick City Gallery of Art on Friday 25th May at 8:00 pm, as part of the welcome and launch of the weekend of the e v+ a Colloquies on Contemporary Art and Culture 2007.

The Catalogue is produced by Gandon Editions. See the e v+ a publications section for details.

e v+ a Colloquies on Contemporary Art and Culture 2007
The e v+ a Colloquies on Contemporary Art and Culture 2007 was held at the Limerick City Gallery of Art on the weekend of May 25th -27th, 2007.

The e v+ a Colloquies, for the sixth time, brought together the present and past e v+ a curators and invited guests, artists and other interested audiences for a round of informal discussions on matters of common concern affecting art and culture.  No formal lectures or presentations were scheduled and no preconceived theme or structure guided the event beyond what developed naturally as those gathered expressed their interests and concerns over how art and culture interrelate in the present day. The spirit of this gathering was open, friendly, modest in scale and ambition but keen on the exchange of opinion and experience.

YOUNG e v+ a
YOUNG e v+ a in 2007 comprised a series of 'Artist in the Gallery' talks for school groups at both primary and secondary levels, youth groups and families, together with a number of special participatory events. The programme also produced a Resource DVD for young people.

Two events were organised as part of Limerick's Riverfest for the May Bank Holiday weekend.

As part of YOUNG e v+ a 2007, children and families were invited to participate in ‘Building Ericsville’ a workshop based on Eric Glavin’s work in OPEN e v+ a 2007. This workshop, led by the artists, Paul Aherne and Olatz Aizpuru, offered children a chance to examine a particular artwork in detail and an opportunity to develop their thoughts and ideas on the subject as they created ‘Ericsville’, a three-dimensional model town.

YOUNG e v+ a also produced a Resource DVD - 'Artists Talk to Camera' - featuring interviews with the curator of e v+ a 2007. Klaus Ottmann and a number of the participating artists.
